salary of the Clerk to the Inspector of Schools, whose duties

are not uniformly so onerous.

Security. Mr. Chiu's salary teine $1200, $100 has teen con-

sidered sufficient, tut this, doubtless, will te reviewed by

the Colonial Treasurer on account of the smaller salary of the

new appointment.

(4) SALARIES. I do not think that there is any need to

raise the salaries on account of the slight increase of work re-

commended atove, but I hope I shall not be considered acusing the

invitation of the Governing Body if I araw attention to the present

inadequacy of the salaries of the Chinese Assistants.

The success of the College in a large manner depends

upon the retention of the services of good, energetic, trained

Chinese Assistants with a command of English. In 1895 two of our

rest Senior Chinese Assistants left to obtain higher salary else-

where. Already in 1926 one of our test Junior Chinese Assistants

has left because his only chance of improving upon $25 a month de-

pended upon a vacancy occurring among his seniors, and even then
